Family name in South Korea

Hello readers,

I know it's been a while since I post something on this blog. I have many reasons to not be able to write anything here but mostly because I was really busy of school. And now that semester is over, I can continue writing :).
Alright, during semester I took this really interesting class which actually my interest in this class did not give me my expected grade (it destroyed the beauty of my grade!!!!!) nevertheless, I got much much better knowledge which I think the sweetest thing in taking this class. This class was Korean Culture for International Student. Yup, I loved this class. You know, the first year i was here i thought i had enough of this korea thing. Like, i have been to many places in Korea, an island, museums, amusement parks, (just) parks, universities, coffee cafe, restaurants, shopping malls, traditional markets, traditional village, sleep in traditional house, etc ... but this class gave me something fresh, really crunchy like cookies from the oven.
This is one interesting lesson. About family name in korea. As you might know, there are a lot of Kim(s) in korea, and yeah from this class I became to know that in fact, Kim is on number one in the list of family names in korea, here are the top 10:
  1. 김 (Kim)
  2. 이 (Lee)
  3. 박 (Park)
  4. 최 (Choi)
  5. 정 (Jung)
  6. 강 (Kang)
  7. 조 (Jo)
  8. 윤 (Yoon)
  9. 장 (Jang)
  10. 임 (Im)

isn't it interesting? ... no? hahah anyway, I guess I will post many interesting things that I have learned from this class. And regardless, I am back!!!
Merry Christmas for whoever celebrate it :)

Inha University | 인하대학교

On February 28, I officially registered as a student in Inha University majoring in Information Engineering which definitely will be changed by me to Computer Engineering when I go to the second year. Inha University is small in size, but I see no problem with it, since it decrease the distance from where I live to where I study. I stayed in dormitory for 1 semester, now I live outside. Let's start from the dormitory.
Inha has 2 dormitories, maybe more, there are 2 that I know. The first one is located in front of the main gate of Inha called Ungbijae, and the second one is located, you can say, beside Inha university called biryongjae. As the second one is the newest, it offers better living experience than the first one, but of course it's kind of more expensive.
GO to the dormitory page, and you can experience the panorama view of both dormitory.
As I am a student majoring in Information Engineering, I always go to this building called Hi-Tech. It is 15 floors building near the back gate. And if you go outside through the back gate, you'll see heaven :).
Now that the first semester is over. I got nice grade :).

CheongYang Gun is a small city which famous of gochu pepper as its agriculture product, so when you go there, you will see so many pepper shaped decoration like city lights, bridge, etc. A couple weeks ago I had school trip to this town to enjoy some kind of festival.
First destination is a bridge which has a huge pepper in the middle of it.

There is nothing much to see in this area except that interesting bridge. Actually I think there are some trail but then due to the limitation of time, we couldn't go there.
Second place was kind of museum, I am not a big fans of museum so I did not really enjoy this place, but then there was a tree full of paper which I found out was a wish tree, so I put my blank wish on it :)
The Tree of Wishes at 청영목재문화체험장 which means the experience place of culture of CheonYang or something like that
The last place was a star obsevatory ~~ yaaaayy, it was my first time to visit and experience the star observatory. 칠갑산스타파크 [ChilGapSan Star Park] thats where we went to see the stars.
What I saw:

School Trip

On 16 July, me and my classmates and other class went to have a school trip. We went to a city called 공주 [GongJu] not far from Daejeon.  First place is a temple which name is 영평사 [YeongPyeongSa]. We were welcomed by a monk and then we were served with a cup of tea called 연꽃 차 [YeonKkutCha] which means Lotus tea. 맜있었다!!

And then after that, teng teng teng ㅋㅋㅋ the big job is coming! So three of us were kindly willing to help the monk to get the leaves of Lotus. What for? you will see. Anyway, we had to wear this funny rubber clothes and I really looked like a Mario. And out task was taking the leaves of Lotus ... at the swamp ... ㅋㅋ I know, it was scary but there were no snakes or crocodiles though. But really, it was really hard to move as you had to step on the mud.

Even though we were so tired and the job was very difficult (and the weather was very hot) we finally collected a lot of leaves so that we could eat for that day. *sigh we really had to work really hard for our stomach.
So ... the leaves was then for wrapping the rice. In temple, monk do not eat any kind of meat, so we have to eat this red rice mixed with several kinds of bean. So, the rice was put on the leaves (of course it was cleaned first) and then we wrapped it and we waited for several minutes. But, because we were really hungry, we just ate it anyway. My tongue did not really agree with the taste though. Anyway, the guys seemed to like it ^^.

After that, we once again drunk the tea and then ready to go to the next place.
The next place is Gongsanseong Fortress. It is a fortress inside the city, but because the guide was speaking in Korean, I did not really understand about this fortress.

And then we went straight to Gongju National Museum where we could see the discovery of the King which I forget his name. They said the King was very big and the shoe size is enormous. Anyway, it was interesting.

Then we went back to Daejeon.
Hey ... that leave could be a hat too ^^

Time Warp!!! Welcome to 문의문화재단진~~~

문의문화재단진 [ Moonui Moonhwaje Tanjin ] -- Munui Cultural Property Site, located in Daecheong-ho, is a beautiful place with amazing scenery. The houses are old-time-style Korea look alike. There is a so called government office which used to be the house and the office of Korea Government. There are 3 main rooms; Left room was used for people (or employee) to have breakfast, lunch and dinner; the right room was used for employees to sleep; and the middle room was used as the place for the King. There was actually no presence of the King, but people still had to respect him inside this room.

This is what written on the information board:
"Munsan-Gwan
Chungcheongbuk-do Tanggible
Cultural Property No. 49

Built in 1666, the seventh year of King Hyeon-Jong, this structure is believed to be a government office or a guest house of the Munui magistrate. It is considered as an important materials for the study of architectural styles of the middle Josun Period.

It was moved to the Munui-mweon in 1979 because of the construction of the Daecheon Dam and removed here in 1996.

On both sides of the tile-roofed main building is an attached building with a hipped and gabled roof.
There are corridors between the main buiding and the annexed ones. The materials and construction techniques indicate that the buildings were built during different periods. In fact, this kind of construction can be seen in the guest house in Jeonju, Jeon-buk Province, therefore, it looks like a guest house rather than a government office. An inscription on one of the concave tiles shows that the buiding was repaired in 1728, the fourth year of King Yeongjo. "

고인돌 [ Kuindol ] this is the place to bury people, who already died of course.

You eat tofu -- I make it!!

Tofu -- A kind of food made of soy bean. Tofu is one of famous foods you can find in Asia countries. On 30th of April, me and my classmates went to Daecheong-ho, a village just 1 hour from Daejeon city. We learnt how to make Tofu and as our appreciation, we helped them to get rid of stones from their field.
