오늘 배운 것 | What I learnt today ^^

Despite the fact that today I was so powerless and lazy in class ... my teacher -while explaining about what we should learn from the book-  tucked in a quite interesting thing about Korea life. If you want to have a date in Korea, there are some food that you don't want to eat together with whoever you are going to date:

자장면 [Jajangmyon]
taken from: http://i13.photobucket.com/albums/a287/thewreckoning82/jajangmyon.jpg

Why? because the black sauce of this food will make your mouth become black and it's really gonna be an awkward view on your face and you don't want to look ugly, do you? so... no jajangmyon ^^.
Kimbab
taken from : http://www.kyungku.net/xe/food/files/attach/images/175/7845/DSC05256.jpg

No kimbab also ... my teacher said it's because it's too cheap .... like 1000KRW so you don't want to spend your special time eating something cheap, right?
She also mentioned about Samgyopsal which is pork barbeque but then I did not really catch the reason.
So ... what should you eat? Based on my teacher advise ... go to somewhere clean and with nice environtment and eat ...:

Spaghetti

She said it's because the place will be really nice and clean ... but ... its your preference, right? ^^
go and have a date ^^

겨울 | 冬 | Winter | Musim Dingin

You guys know what winter is, right? It's not always with the snow .. but for me ,,, snow is winter :).
I love snow ... it's white and when I step on it it feels so crispy. I wish there were winter that is not cold and has snow ...
Anyway ... My first winter in Korea, but not my first winter though. Nothing much different than my previous winter experience. The same snow, the same slippery road.
I have been busy with the university admission things. I applied to 4 universities which are KAIST, Pusan National University, Inha University, and Chungnam National University where I study Korean language courses. And I did the admission on winter :).
I was so happy when KAIST admission team called me for an interview which means I passed the document screening as the first selection of the admission. But then, when I was very nervous and excited at the same time, it was all destroyed by my incapability in interview. I said I was ready, but the truth was I wasn't ready for something bigger than I thought. I did not expect some questions coming, I was like "stuck". My defense system was destroyed ... alright it might be too much for that situation. Anyway, I did my best ... and whatever the result will be, I believe it is the best thing for me. They are expert, and they know whether I am ready to study at KAIST or not, so ... I believe they will make the best decision. But yeah~~ POSITIVE!!!
Pusan National University admission team also called me today, it was kind of interview via phone. Today, i thought I was done with this admission things, but I got another task. The university needs the prove that I am one of the 10% best students from all graduates (at the same year) in my school. I am not even sure or even have any confidence that I am one of them. It is because my average score of high school was below 8.0... I know scores do matter. Those numbers are magical. Anyway, I will try my best to get that prove before 3 of next month ...
During the conversation over the phone, the lady asked me why did I get this scholarship when my score was below 8.0?? I was kind of shock ... and kind of thinking .. what should I answer?? ...
I don't know the reason ... the government does ... they chose me, which means there must be something on my application package that made the Government of Republic of Korea trusted me and granted me this scholarship.
Well, I did not say the exact thing like i wrote just above this ... hahah. I said that I don't know the reason, but it might be because that I have good scores in my college that I attended for 1 year and 2 months. But it did not change the fact that I have to get the prove that I am one of 10% of best students in my school. Yup,,, like Korean said ... Fighting!!
I also did my admission to Inha University. I had some problem because I did not send some required documents and just today I sent the missing documents so I am safe ... for now.
And Chungnam's interview will be on January 13.
Actually I am really concern about this, because if I failed to get the admission in any university, my scholarship is to be cancelled and I have to go back home.
I know there is no relation between this and the title ... but what I meant was that ... all this things happened in winter :) ...

Wish me luck, everybody ^^

漢字 | 한자 | Hanja | Chinese Character

Yup, it's been a while. I have been busy with university admission things and I almost finished everything. I did one interview and it went really bad. I really sucked ㅠㅠ. Anyway, the result will be on 11 of January, nice date, huh? 11-1-11. well, I won't expect much .. but yeah POSITIVE!!
anyway, just want to tell that I am starting to get interested in chinese character, so I am learning about it. I am learning it slowly because it's really difficult. I don't even know how to pronounce it. Just learn how to write and to know the meaning. And since some Korean words derived from chinese word, so I think it might help me to understand more. These are some of them:
―  =  1     六  =  6     百  =  100               山  =  산 Mountain   夏  =  하 Summer
二  =  2     匕  =  7     大  =  대 Great        水  =  수 Water       屋  =  옥 House
三  =  3     八  =  8     民  =  민 People      地  =  지 Earth         服  =  복 Clothes
四  =  4     九  =  9     國  =  국 Country    天  =  천 Sky
五  =  5     十  =  10   火  =  화 Fire          冬  =  동 Winter

I know some more, but ,,, maybe later I'll write it more. From those character some characters I could combine it into a Korean word, for example
大  =  대 Great
韓  =  한
民  =  민 People
國  =  국 Country

大韓民國 = 대한민국 [Daehanminguk] Republic of Korea

韓  =  한
屋  =  옥 House

韓屋 = 한옥 [Hanok] Traditional house of Korea

韓  =  한
服  =  복 Clothes

韓服  =  한복 [Hanbok] Traditional clothes of Korea

中  =  중 Middle/Center
國  =  국 Country

中國 = 중국 [Jung-gook] China

火  =  화 Fire
山  =  산 Mountain

火山  =  화산 [Hwa-San] Volcano

大  =  대 Great

大田  =  대전 [Daejeon] Daejeon --> City that I live ^^

우리 형 - My Brother

우리형 [My Brother] - I just finished watching this movie. This is a 2004 released movie and I like this movie very much because ...
Well, the story is about the two brothers who don't have father. The older brother has harelip which makes their mother puts more attention to him than to the younger one. I believe because of that the younger brother becomes a rascal and is good in fighting, whereas the older brother is good in studying and later studies at one of the best university in Korea which is Seoul National University. The mother puts a very big expectation on him but feels hopeless with the younger brother.
The mother keeps giving more attention to the older brother and the younger brother gets upset day by day and one day there is a big fight and he left the house, and the reason is because of his jealousy that their mother puts more attention to younger one. The younger one gets into this organization which does the money renting and will do anything to have you pay the rent, including violence. One day when that fight happens, he goes to one of house which borrows money from that organization and since they don't want to pay, the younger one destroy their properties and beats the son of the house owner ragingly since he is also upset because of her mother.
After that, the younger one decided to get out from the organization but then, it is the beginning of a big problem. Things are getting better after that brothers has a conversation accompanied by alcohol. They start to understand each other and forgive each other. The night before when the older one has to go back to Seoul, he was hit by the son of that house owner who got beaten by the younger one because they couldn't pay their debt. Anyway, the older one died.
At the end of the story, the mother receives a letter from the older one that is written before he died as a card of birthday. He tells that he is sorry for his younger brother and asks her mother to put attention to the younger brother.

It's not exactly same like my story. But indeed I feel the similarity. I have an older brother, but he is not good in studying, but yeah I heard he was a rascal when he was in a high school, and I am as the younger one I am kind of good in studying. Just like the story, my mother actually puts more attention to me than him, I do not want it, though. One day my older brother got really upset and left the house because my mom gave me more shrimp than him ... Of course I felt guilty and I did not want it to happen. I often fight with him too, of course it's his fault ... well ... maybe sometimes it's mine. Anyway, just like in the movie, my mom put a big expectation from me, like I will get a good job and make them happy, someday. But my mom does not expect that big from my older brother, it is good if he can pay his own spending by him self, instead of asking money from mom. Anyway, I suddenly remember him, though ... He is actually a good guy and just like in the movie, the younger one (which is the rascal one) said something like "I have my own way to put attention to you (older brother)" and I believe my brother also has his own way to put attention to me, I can feel it. We often share our clothes, well, actually he has more clothes than me hahah. I have never called him brother, though.
Actually one of the reason I was so eager to go out of the house was because of this, I wanted them to be ok with each other, I wanted my mom to put less attention to me and more to the others, not that I don't want the attention ... but I had enough ^^.
I am sorry to him, if I ever hurt him directly or undirectly ... I believe I have ever done that. Let's do the best as we can ... and for my mom ... you know we love you ^^.
His name is Nobel Yudhistira ... and he is my brother.
I know we don't look similar ㅎㅎㅎ

WSK Stories of the Month - Korean Grafted Cactus Fascinates the World

Let us pay some attention to the newly developed Korean grafted cactus that comes under such sweet names as “seolhong,” “hoohong,” and “saekdong.”

The usual association with cactus is some thorny, misshapen, rough-looking plant standing under the scorching sun in the desert.

Well, time to shatter that association.

The grafted cactus of Korea comes in numerous splash colors (red, pink, yellow, orange….) and sizes (a cute little cauliflower-like thing the size of your fist!).

The Rural Development Administration(RDA) exhibited its newly developed grated cactus at the horticulture fair held last November 11. The Korean grafted cactus has been garnering excellent reviews from the worldwide horticulture market with its annual volume of export exceeding USD 2 million to over 30 countries including the U.S. and the Netherlands, the leading floriculture nation.

At the flower fair, a series of rigorous eval!uation was conducted on the presented cactuses including how vivid the color is, how firm it is, its capacity to produce “baby” plant, its commercial potential and so on.

After passing through a set of meticulous tests and screening, 4 qualified cactuses will be selected to be distributed to the farms. Then they will first undergo a test production to be followed by mass cultivation. The RDA aims at USD 3 million annual export by 2012.

Well, at this rate, not reaching for stars!

WSK Stories of the Month - Korea on the Road to First Class

Chairwoman Lee Bae-Yong of the Presidential Council on Nation Branding on November 15 gave a lecture for the KBS program “The Road to First Class.”

The lecture was on the subject of Korea’s nation brand and the impact of the G20 Seoul Summit.

“Made in Korea” Impact

“Despite the increasing sales of Korean products globally nowadays,” Chairwoman Lee explained, “they still get about a 30% discount compared to similar products made by some other nations because of Korea’s undervalued nation brand.”

Giving examples of French perfume and wine which are products backed up by the country’s strong nation brand, Lee emphasized the importance of nation brand in generating economic profits.

“We need to work on increasing trust and preference for so-called “Made in Korea.” Also, it is getting more and more important nowadays to have strong “software” such as cultural content, human resources and spiritual values as well as hardware.”

Lee also touched upon Korea’s numerous timeless cultural heritages, saying, “I wish to share Korean values and spirits that are imbued in those historic and cultural legacies with the world. Korea’s astounding growth in the 20th century was made possible only because it was backed up by such virtues as harmony, sharing, communication, regards for life and nature.”

“To raise Korea’s nation brand, it is important to have active civic participation. The Council will make best efforts to achieve the goal with 5 major areas of work that we designated which include contributing to the international community, cultivating global citizenship, promoting multiculturalism, developing attractive culture and tourism, and showcasing advanced technology.”

“Korea, as seen in its age-long history and countless cultural relics, has admirable spirits – perseverance, cooperative and pacifist inclination, modesty, warmhearted regards for others. It is important that we remember these timeless virtues of ours,” Lee stressed.

WSK Stories of the Month - Korea’s Women of the Sea (Haenyeo)

The no. 1 search word related to Jeju Island of Korea is hands down the “Ollegil (Olle Road).” Just thinking about taking a walk on Ollegil, especially in the autumn with all this beautiful foliage, lifts one’s mood.

Some while ago, though, before Ollegil came to be such a hot tourist spot, the first thing that came to one’s head thinking about Jeju used to be the “haenyeo,” the sea women; they are female divers in the Korean province of Jeju.

The women born in Jeju had to earn a living either by farming crops or picking sea products. The haenyeo often represents a harsh and strenuous life.

What used to amount to as many as 15,000 haenyeo in 1970 has now plummeted down to a mere third of that number; and most of them are over seventy years of age at that, meaning that haenyeo are fast disappearing.

In light of this sad reality, The LA Times published a feature article on Korean haenyeo, their traditions and current situations.

Haenyeo, Epitome of Toughness

The haenyeo is assumed to have first appeared in the primeval! era when people started turning to the sea for food. It goes similar for the haenyeo of Jeju as well, based upon the age of the shrines on the island built for the safety of fishermen and haenyeo. There are several ancient proverbs and old sayings as well that describe Jeju haenyeo’s physical strength and their tough lifestyle.

WSK Stories of the Month - Cycling at the National Parks of Korea

Autumn is the perfect time for outdoor activities; a crowd of people head to mountain areas to see the magnificent foliage.

Well, if you missed out on the peak foliage season, then how about going bicycling? If hiking is about getting to the top of a mountain, then with cycling, you get to savor the beautiful scenery and ambience you have so far overlooked.

Touring Korea’s National Parks with a Bicycle

The Korea National Park Service announced that they are going to add four more cycling courses to the existing four, so operating a total eight routes.

In the cycling programs offered at the Hallyeohaesang National Park and the Deogyusan National Park, you can rent bicycles for free at the respective park offices.

The Korea National Park Service is planning to create extra cycling courses of 20km at the four parks including Seoraksan, Naejangsan, Jirisan and Woraksan.

Choose a Course that Is Right for Your Capacity

When cycling, it is important to choose a course that fits your strength and skills, and also to be mindful of safety instructions.

For example, if you are on a downhill road, you shouldn’t exceed 10km/h by applying hand brakes. As is common sense, you must wear a helmet as well as restrain from using mobile phones or ear plugs to listen to music. And also, should the unfortunate situation happens where on a downhill you’ve lost control of your bicycle, then you should rather let go of the handles instead of holding tight on to them, which is usually the instinct.

Remember, abiding safety rules aren’t only about your own safety; it’s as much about other cyclists and hikers’ who are near you.

If you are one of those who aren’t really into the taxing, energy-consuming hiking business, then you might want to consider trying a cycling program at the national parks!

Escape to South!! -- SUNCHEON

Fulfilling my wild desire of Suncheon Bay, we went to the 40minutes-away-from-Yeosu Suncheon city. The first time, I thought Suncheon was a very small city which would be like a village, but then once I arrived there, I was so surprised because it was actually not really small. The first place we visited once we reached Suncheon was the information center in Suncheon Station.
Suncheon Station
From here, we asked a lady in the information center and she showed us the bus stop which was only around the station and from that bus stop we took bus number 67 which is the only bus going to Suncheon Bay (it is 순천만 [Suncheonman] in Korean). The fare is only KRW1,100 for 1 trip. Never believe the information screen on the bus stop which tells you how many minutes you have to wait for every bus, it lies ㅋㅋ. Anyway, took about 20-30 minutes to get the Suncheon Bay, the view from the bus was quite calm and peace because we were going across some villages.
You don't have to pay any entrance fee. Here, there are Museum and Star Observatory, but we did not go there since we have limited time. Instead we rode a train which goes through some track and the guide will explain about the view which I could not really understand.
Tour Train
Took around 35 minutes. And since it is already winter, so we could not see any green thing but we saw the amazing gold-colored wide field which is separated  by a (or maybe some) river. It was actually less than I expected, but the environment was really calm and peace and it was not cold, too. I was really satisfied with the scenery.
The journey ended here. It was a really interesting 3 days and 2 nights. In order to get back to Daejeon, we went back to Suncheon Inter-city Bus Station and we needed to go to Gwangju since they don't have direct bus to Daejeon. KRW6,400 for Suncheon - Gwangju and it takes around 1 hour 20 minutes and KRW9,900 from Gwangju to Daejeon which takes around 2hours 30 minutes.

Pictures Here!!
Gonna write more about other trips!!!

Escape to South!! -- YEOSU

Visit Yeosu 2012 -- Yup, Yeosu City is having this expo in 2012, I have seen the plan and it will be really awesome, so you have to visit Yeosu in 2012 ^^.
It takes like 3 hours from Busan to Yeosu. We arrived at Yeosu in the evening and we directly go to our first destination which was a bridge. The don't have Tourist Information Center in the bus terminal which I guess they should have one since ... hello~~you are having an expo in 2012, but we got the tourist map and we were trying to find the way to get to the bridge. They also don't have subway, so the only way to find the bridge was ... asking the locals hahahah. Yeah even though with our limited skill of Korean, we did ask people, and we actually managed to get to the bridge.
Dolsan Bridge
Yeosu is mentioned as the city of light~I guess Gwangju is better to be called city of light, but maybe this one is the reason why Yeosu is called the city of light.
View from the Dolsan Bridge Park
There was also a board sign which says that this place also was a place where a certain drama took place. Anyway, since Yeosu doesn't have subway, we then again had a problem to go back to bus station to find a place to rest. By asking a very friendly local, we managed to get back.
Next day, we decided to take city tour bus departing from Yeosu Station at 10.30 and you need to pay KRW4000. By this bus, we went to the information center where we can watch a short video showing about the expo that will be held there in Yeosu in 2012. It was really amazing video. I think it will be a very successful event.
Yeosu Station
Next destination is Odong-do island. We actually could go by bus, but then we decided to take a boat to go around the island. There were a lot of birds and it was a nice view, just like any other islands.
Odong-do Island
Arriving at the island, we directly went to a track which the guide explained one by one about the island, the flora, and some spots. This track led us to a light house that we can get inside and see the view from the top. After that, we went to another place which was a kind of museum.
Odong-do Lighthouse
Anyway, we were supposed to continue the trip until 18.00, but then because I had a huge obsession of going to Suncheon Bay, we decided to finish earlier and going to Suncheon City. Departing from Yeosu Express Bus terminal, by only KRW4000 we spent 45minutes in the bus heading to Suncheon City!!!

Escape to South!! -- BUSAN

We run away from the coldness of Daejeon, to the South part of South Korea. The first destination is Busan!!!
Start at 10AM in the morning, we went to Express Bus Terminal from Chungnam National University, it takes like 30 minutes by bus number 102. The ticket to Busan is so expensive .. KRW22,000. Anyway, it took around 3 hours and something, I guess the bus went through Daegu. As soon as we arrived in Busan Express Bus Terminal in Nopo-dong, we went to the information center .. since we planned nothing!! hahaha so information center was our first aid ^^. Got the travel map ... and we started the travel from the closest travel spot on the map that we can go by subway which was Beomeosa Temple. If you have ever been to one of temple in Korea, I suggest you to not come to this place. Why? because I guess there is nothing special, it's all the same. But then if you want to try to have an experience of staying in a temple, you might want to come to this temple, because they offer this service.  Beomeosa temple is very close from the bus station, just take the subway and get out at the first stop Beomeosa Temple, take exit 5 or 7 and walk to a kind of bus stop, the road was kind of hilly and take the bus number 90.
While waiting for the subway, there was a guy with a cute dog suddenly talked to me. He thought I was chinese ... man~~seriously? well, it actually added my ethnicity delusion: Pinoy, Latino, Vietnamese, and hey,, the guy at the embassy thought I was mixed European and Asian ㅎㅎㅎ. Anyway, that guy suddenly touched my cheek hahah I guess he liked me ... then he advised us to go to Gwangalli Beach at night. Actually we had no plan of visiting that beach, but my friend then suggested to go there, too. Maybe my friend thought it was a mystery that a strange guy suggested us to go to that beach. So ... from the Beomeosa Temple station, we took subway to Geumnyeonsan station, took a little walk to the Gwangalli Beach where we could see the Gwangan Bridge glowing at night!!!!
View of Gwangan Bridge from Gwangalli Beach -- Thank you strange man!! ^^
we walked along the beach for a while. I fell in love with Busan since they have this kind of place. You know because you always have a place to go like this, just to hang out, to be alone, or something ^^. There are a lot of cafe and restaurant along the road, too. There is also a photo machine which you can take picture and send the picture to your email ... it's free!!!
The next day ... we visited Busan Aquarium!!Got off at Haeundae station, walked a bit and found the Aquarium next to Haeundae Beach! The normal admission fee was KRW17,000 but if you get the discount coupon you will have to pay only KRW14,000. I always like Aquarium, when I saw a certain animal there, I remember Shedd Aquarium in Chicago.
@Busan Aquarium
@Shedd Aquarium
There were some show in the aquarium that you don't want to miss, like magic show (they do it inside an aquarium, too), penguin feeding show, shark feeding show, etc.
Not far from the aquarium, there is Haeundae market which sells kinds of sea product. ^^.
We actually went to some other places the night before going to aquarium, like 40 Steps Cultural Tour Theme Street and Shanghai Street, but nothing much to see.
If you are planning to go to Busan and will use subway a lot, you'd better buy a one day pass. Only KRW3,500 for the whole day!!

This is now for Busan ... around afternoon, carrying our bag, we went to the Express Bus Terminal in Nopo-dong ... bought bus tickets and heading to ... YEOSU!!
